The image that made me
By Your name on Jun 20 09
The image that made me decide human rights is what I wanted to focus my life's work on was watching a documentary about the genocide in Rwanda. When the narrator says the conflict poured into neighbouring countries the camera pans a river, at first you think they are taking a moment to be artistic, then suddenly you start to see body after body and you realize the river if full of people who were killed. It was that moment I knew I had to study human rights.

Trust me that I know that human rights are violated. I work as a brain injury lawyer and I have come to get in contact with a lot of people that fight for their rights that are written in the Constitution... and of course not respected.

Racism
By Dena Liles on Jan 4 09
Definitely the Civil Rights Movement and the atrocities committed against them in the southern United States. I grew up in Alabama, and as a child my family allowed me to watch the news. I'll never forget the Birmingham police with water cannons and German Shepards attacking our own people because of the color of their skin. One day when we got the new Life Magazine I remember opening it up, and there were for black men hung from trees, and a crowd of white people including children gathered around them. I've always wondered if one of those children ever saw that picture with their family there when they got older, and how they felt about it.
Those two images are burned into my brain. I'll never forget them, ever!

The first time of my life I
By Mylène on Dec 18 08
The first time of my life I realized human rights were not respected was in1992. By the time, I was only 10, a little girl. 2 Bosnian girls, Sanela and Alma, came as refugees to my village. The fact that they had no more dads because they had been shot or no more house or toys like me caused a great impact on me! They had nothing left!! They were my friends. You could see in their eyes that life had been very tough on them. Sanela saw her whole family being shot!
They rights as persons had not been respected, as they were treated as cattle, as not-worthy objects.
Life can be so cruel to so many people!!!
Let´s act!

May i just start by saying that i have owned a pc for some years but this is the first time i have ever left a comment or written on a blog if indeed thats what this is.pls forgive any laps in comment leaving protocols.I must confess that the most obvious reason for having my eyes opened to human rights ie witnessing or watching footage of those poor souls in the world who have no rights or voice and can not defend/protect themselves from injustices,is not the reason. From a young age i was made aware of how lucky those of us who do have ,and i hesitate in saying ,democracy and certainly priviliged life.compared to i believe four fiths of the world or however many people survive on a dollar a day.Again must confess that having been very much in to, not knowingly ,human rights fairness justice freedom equal rights tolerance ,i never labelled these thoughts and emotions because still today i believe tha the vast majority of people on this planet are honest and its hard to imagine how the perpitrators of these crimes against fellow humans could do what they do,but i stand on no moral high ground because i have become accepting of this desensitized and able to watch witness images clips on news while stuffing my face with supper and not be inspired to do anythingmore than cry and voice irrelivant distaste.in my defence the huge sense of not knowing what to do and where to start to change things is why i think me and millions of others choose to desensitise our selves.,again am sure that most people want peacefull lifes and will help there fellow man where poss ,however i am not wring here now because saw a particulaly vile piece of footage and people suffering i only feel lost and sad never inspired by suffering,i am writing this because my eyes where opened to human rights by an amazing courageous determined lady called leah chishugi while she appeared on hard talk bbc news tlking about some of the most unforgivable crimes against women and young baby girls in the congo, having been victim herself and managing to escape to england she would have been intitleled to start agin and just get on with her life and try to make some sense of her experience or try to live for the future ,instead she campaingning trying making a differenceto scared womens lifes women who have 7/8 children of witch 4 where conceived through rape not having pain killers the choice option of morning after pill ,this lady has gone back shes making waves iwant to contact her website want to help her not sure how but her courage is inspiring and if i can do a little to alot something i will do that i promise so pls anyone who can send me an email address or web address for this lady, you will be getting ball rolling,i would just like to share this newly learned experiance to those reading this in warmth comfort and safety if credit cunch has made you have to let people that work for you no theres no work and you not quite sure how u paying mortgage/rent you have recently bought food with coins from bottle told your mates u fancy quiet night in when really cant afford bus never mind a drink trying to convince people that heatings off cos of your carbon footprint reduction pledge and the car needs m.o.t and service REMEMBER this might be the good luck ,we will always be the lucky ones
