Fighting in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo has displaced thousands of people, leaving them in camps, unable to return home.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from North Kivu on what conditions are like for those left displaced by the fighting.

Beginning August 19, 2007 there was a series of peaceful protests across Burma as monks, activists and ordinary citizens challenged misrule and repression. On September 26, the Burmese military government responded with violence. Thousands were detained, hundreds disappeared and the country is in the grip of repression.

Over three weeks, the course looks at the complex phenomenon of forced migration from a number of different angles. Beginning with reflection on the diverse ways of conceptualising forced migration, the course considers the political, legal and psychosocial issues associated with contemporary displacement. Individual course modules also tackle a range of other topics, including globalisation and forced migration, negotiating strategies in humanitarian situations, and development-induced displacement.

The Burmese army launched a large scale offensive in the districts of Toungoo, Nyaung Lay Bin and Muthraw in northern Karen State in November 2005 targeting the civilian Karen population. This offensive has been ongoing for over a year and it continues today. Villages are being shelled with mortars, looted and burnt to the ground. Crops and food supplies are being destroyed. Burmese soldiers are ordered to shoot on sight, regardless of whether it is a combatant or a defenseless civilian.
