Nahr al-Bared Camp: Cleaning Up

The first few hundred Palestinian families were allowed to return to their destroyed or damaged homes at the outskirts of Nahr al-Bared Camp in winter 2007/08. They faced a very difficult situation. Many of them lost their homes and most of their property was either destroyed or stolen.
This short video documents the refugee's experiences once they returned to their camp and their efforts to deal with their new reality.

For security reasons, only an anonymized version of the film is published.

Nahr al-Bared Camp: Writings on the Walls

This short film documents many racist, sexist, humiliating and insulting graffiti that Lebanese soldiers had written on the walls of the houses in the destroyed Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared.

While many graffiti are directed against the non-Palestinian Islamist militant group Fatah al-Islam and its leader Shaker al-Abssi, others address the Palestinian refugees. In some cases, the destruction of the camp is portrayed as a revenge for massacres committed by Palestinian militias in the Lebanese civil war.

On November 28th 2007 the three anti-militarists Florian, Axel, and Oliver were „spared” on bail from investigative detention. Before, they had been in jail in Berlin-Moabit (Germany) for almost four months, because of an alleged arson on miltary vehicles on Juli 31st. The same day these three were arrested, Andrej was also detained and the homes and work places of three other persons were searched. The accusation against all seven was: „Membership in a terrorist organization” (§129a of the German criminal code) called „militant group”.

Nahr al-Bared Camp: Traces of Collective Dispossession

On March 31st 2008, the Lebanese army made 20 houses in Majles Street in the destroyed Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared accessible. All 20 buildings had signs of burning; sometimes, entire rooms or even floors were completely burnt. At least in 16 of the buildings, traces of flammable liquids, including petrol and gasoline could be found on the walls.

In October 2007, UUSC held a roundtable titled "From Combat to Peace and Reconciliation: The Journey of Two Iraq War Veterans." The roundtable was a discussion between four people: Camilo Mejia, board Chair of Iraq Veterans Against the War as well as author of the book "Road from Ar Ramadi;" Liam Madden, Co-Founder of Appeal for Redress and Co-Founder of Iraq Veterans against the War; Wayne Smith, UUSC Civil Liberties program manager; and Charlie Clements, UUSC President.
