We're going to screen SKID ROW on Sunday, August 24th at Harkins Theater in Denver the day before the Democratic National Convention starts. The National Coalition for the Homeless will have a Voter Registration Booth and we are looking to attract much national press to bring the homeless crisis to the forefront of the election campaign. There are many new stories emerging about middle-class homelessness and we belive that the crisis is worsening with each day the war drags on.

On May 23, 2008, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Racism, Mr. Doudou Diene of Senegal, was in Chicago as part of a three-week mission to the U.S. Mr. Diene attended a public hearing where representatives from NGOs and victims provided testimony on racial discrimination practices in the city.

Doug Schenkelberg of Heartland Alliance provided testimony on poverty and homelessness.

Los Angeles has the largest homeless population in the United States, but it a mirror for the homeless crisis facing most urban centers. SKID ROW, featuring Pras Michel of the Fugees, lived on Skid Row in LA for nine days to help make this film. Indie Rights/Indiepix has created and Activist Edition of this film that comes with all the resources you need to host and promote a screening of the film, SKID ROW. Also included are the tools you need to have effective discussions after the screening and to organize an effective plan to help deal with the issues underlying homelessness.

This is the trailer for the compelling documentary film, SKID ROW. Although Los Angeles has the largest homeless population, it is a mirror of the homeless crisis existing in most of our urban areas. Pras Michael of the Fugees, now an activist for the homeless, lived on the streets of Skid Row for nine days to help make this film. Indie Rights has created an Activist Edition DVD that contains all the resources necessary to Raise Awarness and Inspire Action. Individuals and orgnizations are invited to host screenings of the film or partner with us to do something about this crisis.

According to UN research it is predicted that, by 2030, half the world’s population will be living in slums. What are the forms of political action emerging in these 'naked cities', where the populace are effectively refugees without basic amenities, let alone rights?

One inspirational example is the South African shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo.

About the documentary:
With a population of over 10 million, Indonesia's capital Jakarta is one of Asia's mega-cities. Like similar cities, there is increasing tension between an expanding elite population and a growing urban poor. The mayor of Jakarta has a solution to this problem - evict the urban poor. This video looks at life in three poor communities in Jakarta, highlighting their strategies for survival in very uncertain times. Produced and directed by Robert Wyrod/Rachel Rinaldo.
