Abigail Disney discusses "Pray The Devil Back to Hell"

Abigail Disney produced Gini Reticker's award-winning film . WITNESS presented our second annual WITNESS Award at Silverdocs Documentary Film Festival to "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" in June 2008.

The film details a coalition of Christian and Muslim women in Liberia who created a movement for peace to help end the country's civil war.

I spoke briefly with Abigail who was there to collect the award about why she and Gini made the film and what kind of outreach they are planning.

THE SOUL EATERS examines the challenges facing women in Western Africa, who are held responsible for unexplained deaths in their communities, and are accused of engaging in witchcraft and sorcery. In Burkina Faso, a "soul eater" is typically a woman who is past child bearing age, someone who may not have children, or someone who exhibits behavior that is somehow "socially unacceptable." Driven from their villages, often with no place to go, these women are marginalized from society, and many are unable to ever return to their homes.

The Plight of Liberian Refugees in Ghana

On February 19, 2008, in light of the perceived lack of options to progress from their protracted refugee situations, a group of several hundred LIberian women began a peaceful protest to call for additional assistance from the UNHCR on the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana.

The UNHCR, the Government of Ghana, and the protesting refugees were unable to reach a compromise and on March 17, 2008, before dawn, the Ghanaian authorities arrived en masse to arrest over six hundred of these women and some children. They remained in detention for two weeks without being brought to court.
