Death by Detention

Major press outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post have recently reported on the “System of Neglect,” namely, the state of immigration detention center conditions. As told by her sister June Everett, watch the story of Sandra Kenley, a 52- year-old grandmother, who after living in the U.S. legally for 33 years, was subjected to these very conditions and died in immigration detention.
The Plight of Liberian Refugees in Ghana

On February 19, 2008, in light of the perceived lack of options to progress from their protracted refugee situations, a group of several hundred LIberian women began a peaceful protest to call for additional assistance from the UNHCR on the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana.

The UNHCR, the Government of Ghana, and the protesting refugees were unable to reach a compromise and on March 17, 2008, before dawn, the Ghanaian authorities arrived en masse to arrest over six hundred of these women and some children. They remained in detention for two weeks without being brought to court.

Know the Truth About Immigrant Detention

Americans take pride in our history as a refuge for men, women, and children escaping war and torture. We also take pride in a justice system that guarantees us the right to a fair hearing. The U.S. immigration detention system betrays these ideals when it locks up immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers and denies them access to legal counsel and other basic human rights.

Our elected officials in Washington D.C. must know that we expect more from our government. When U.S. law denies rights to one group of people, the rights of all are threatened.

"I'm not scared of terrorists. I'm scared much more of the Government" - Vivienne Westwood, fashion designer. Under current UK anti-terror laws you can be locked up and repeatedly questioned by police for up to 28 days without being charged. This is a cinema advert made for Liberty.
