Settlers Attack Shepherds in the South Hebron Hills

On 8 June ‘08, two settlers tried unsuccessfully to drive shepherds off Palestinian land near Khirbet Susiya. After they left, the shepherds called relatives for reinforcement, fearing an attack. Among those who came was Muna a-Nawaj’ah, with a video camera she received from B'Tselem. Ten minutes later, she filmed four masked men armed with clubs approaching the family and attacking one of the shepherds. They then severely beat other members of the family. \In January 2007, B'Tselem launched "Shooting Back", a video advocacy project focusing on the Occupied Territories.

June 26 marks the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The spotlight has been shining for months on U.S. government torture of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay detention facilities, and these abuses will likely be a major focus of attention on June 26. But the U.S. Human Rights Network and its 255 member organizations have long argued that torture does not begin and end outside U.S.

After her son was suspected of participating in protests lead by university students against a mining corporation, the Indonesian police apprehended Anselina Temkon from her home.

She was allegedly beaten with a gun, her hands burnt with cigarettes and, with a gun to her head, the police allegedly told her they were going to take her to a nearby town and “finish her off” if she did not disclose the whereabouts of her son.

Police reportedly detained Anselina for four days without access to visitors.

SKP stands for Sekretariat Keadilan dan Perdamaian or the Office of Justice and Peace, an integral part of the Catholic Diocese of Jayapura in Papua, Indonesia. This office was established by the Bishop of Jayapura, Most Rev. Dr Leo Laba Ladjar OFM on 1 July 1998. Since 15 August 2005, the Diocese of Jayapura and the Franciscans Friars in Papua agreed to establish the Board of Founders to assume all responsibility of this ministry.
