The Children Need Playgrounds

Samvad did a month long video workshop with slum children to build loyalty with their fellow slum residents, who paid a small fee for their children to participate. The children made a video demanding playgrounds in their areas, because playing in the streets get harrassed by adults or hurt in road accidents. The children took the video to the Collector who agreed to act on their request, which became a great lesson in civic engagement for the children and their families.

The Youth Can Do Anything

This video uses stories of women rickshaw drivers and young extras in Bollywood dance scenes to encourage youth from the slums to pursue their dreams, with or without an education. It's energetic, polished look and its unconventional message attracted lots of youth at the screenings, and many have been inspired by this video to get involved in Akshara's work to create an alternative space for Youth in Mumbai.

Stop The Privatization of Water

This video informed slum dwellers that the Mumbai Municipal Authority was planning to privatize their water. After the screenings, 300 people instead of the usual 60 showed up for a government meeting on water and demanded that the officials come clean about the plan and the costs to slum dwellers. Shortly after that meeting, the government halted the privatization plan in that part of Mumbai, and started supplying water twice a day instead of once in that particular area.
