Sex Workers Rights in Macedonia: You Must Know About Me - Excerpts

In Macedonia, as throughout the world, sex workers are pushed to the margins of society by a combination of prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Yet, the fact that a person sells sexual services cannot be used as justification for the denial of their fundamental rights, to which all human beings are entitled.
“You Must Know About Me” is a first-hand account of sex workers’ experiences and aspirations off and on the streets. While dealing with harassment and violence from clients, pimps, and the police, sex workers strive to counter hostile public attitudes by speaking out and fighting for their rights. The video calls for zero tolerance of violence against sex workers and the coordinated response of institutions to the actual needs of sex workers.

Chernobyl: The Day After (23 year later)

The day after the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - the worst man-made disaster in history - the life went on seemingly undisturbed, even though the blast released as much as 400 times the radioactive contamination of the Hiroshima bomb.
It took local officials 36 hours to start evacuating 50,000 residents of the nearest city of Prypiat. Eventually, 5,000 children would contract thyroid cancer, more than 300,000 people were made homeless, and millions are left traumatized.

Every 2 minutes another American is sexually assaulted

From www.rainn.org:
In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness & Prevention Month, RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the largest anti-sexual assault organization in the USA, released a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) entitled “Speak-Out.” The PSA aims to encourage those affected by sexual violence to “speak-out” and get help through the National Sexual Assault Hotlines, available 24/7 over the phone (800.656.HOPE) and online at rainn.org.
Every 2 minutes another American is sexually assaulted; 80% of victims are under the age of 30. If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, please know that the assault is not your fault and that you are not alone. In the event that you are sexually assaulted, find a safe place, and contact the police immediately. To speak with someone who can help you through the aftermath, and accompany you to the hospital, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE) or visit the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at rainn.org.

Russia: Attacks on Human Rights Advocates Continue

Once again, Russia is failing to take proper action and bring to justice those responsible for attacks on human rights defenders and journalists. The most recent victim of these attacks is Lev Ponomaryov, 67, who suffered a brutal beating on March 31st in Moscow. He is the leader of the NGO For Human Rights and a prominent government critic.

"They were kicking me, trying to hit my head and chest. I covered myself, as they teach you to do in films, and screamed, very loudly," BBC quoted Mr. Ponomaryov describing the attack on Russian TV.

Amnesty International reported that right before the incident Mr. Ponomaryov met with a Council of Europe official to discuss "allegations of politically-motivated abuses of the criminal justice system" in the highly-publicized case against the former head of Yukos oil company.

In the press conference following the incident, Russian human rights leaders asked "Who will be next?" and signed an appeal to the Russian President requesting his direct oversight of the investigation and prosecution of this and similar crimes.

"Political terror" is how Yuri Dzhibladze - whose interview we bring you today - describes the current climate in which Russian NGOs operate. Mr. Dzhibladze is the president of the Russian Center for the Development of Democracy and Human Rights. In this video, he provides an analysis of the major challenges that social justice and human rights advocates face today. Mr. Dzhibladze addresses the international community and European authorities with suggestions for concrete actions to end impunity for attacks on human rights defenders and journalists.

Rapekit backlog obstructs justice for survivors

Sarah Tofte, researcher at Human Rights Watch's US Program, is an expert on sexual violence, DNA evidence and sentencing, and other aspects of US criminal justice policy. She has most recently aided in exposing the backlog of rape kits in Los Angeles, and is advocating for the elimination of backlogs nationally. Here is an excerpt from her article published in the LA Times in June 2008:

According to the Justice Department's most recent National Crime Victimization Survey, only about 40% of sexual assaults are reported to police, though other nongovernmental studies indicate even lower rates of 10% to 20%. But among those who do report a rape, most are taken to a hospital to have a rape kit created. In this age of "CSI" and other forensic science TV series, rape victims believe that DNA and other evidence in their rape kits will help police and prosecutors find and punish their assailants. If only that were more true.

The National Institute of Justice estimates that at least 400,000 rape kits are sitting untested in police stations and crime labs across the country. In the city of Los Angeles alone, more than 7,000 sit in refrigerated storage in a city warehouse facility and a trailer behind police headquarters.
In this interview, Sarah examines the problem of rape kit backlogs and points out to several aspects of a comprehensive plan to bring justice to rape survivors.

Interview conducted by Emma Jackson

Research by Eva Hoier Greene

I’m a Roma Woman, I’m a European Woman, I’m a Woman

Data on Roma women - when statistics are collected - stand in sharp contrast with those on Romani men and non-Romani women. Romani women live shorter than the rest of females in a country. While educational level and employment rate are abysmal among Roma, Romani women are less educated and fare worse economically than their male counterparts. Early marriage and underage pregnancy are more prevalent among Romani girls, who also have higher primary education dropout rates than Romani boys. (The majority of Romani children lacks opportunity for equal access to education.) Excessive poverty and deplorable housing conditions in which the majority of Roma live, including the lack of access to clean water and sanitary infrastructure, disproportionally burden Romani women who traditionally take care of family members and other vulnerable members of the community. Widespread violence against women is deemed acceptable, seriously limiting women’s access to education, jobs, and health care.

From www.neww.org:

This 4-minute spot, produced for International Women’s Day 2009, features flashes of the personal history of five Roma human rights activists from all over Europe along with footage from Roma settlements across the continent.

The video is part of a campaign on Roma women by Romedia Foundation, a Budapest-based civil organization, and Amnesty International Hungary, with the support of Duna Television and the Decade of Roma Inclusion.

In these times of crisis, as social cohesion is greatly endangered by the multiplication of acts of extreme violence against Roma in Hungary and elsewhere, the campaign exhorts the public to respect Roma in all their complexity.
