Gaza protest in SL - conflict resolution in virtual worlds?

virtual worlds like Second Life are places, where intercultural dialogue is happening every day. In the case of the response to Israel's Gaza offensive, targeting Hamas installations in December 2008, SL residents engaged in heated discussions on the Middle East issue and many avatars were protesting the reported human rights violations by Israeli soldiers. Draxtor Despres attended lectures on peace efforts and interviewed researchers in the field of conflict resolution, even went out into the physical realm to find answers about how to engage in more fruitful debates that have real world impact.

Second Life Solidarity with Burma

90 percent of the 55 million who live in Burma survive on less then one dollar a day. The country became independent from British colonial rule just after the Second World War and its multi-ethnic society has struggled with nation building ever since. In the fall of 2007 peaceful protests against the military regime have been met with brutal force and Burmese armed forces had fired into crowds killing an untold number. The virtual world of Second Life showed support for the protesters and proofed that the virtual community cares deeply about Real Life issues.

Virtual Guantanamo

The virtual world of Second Life is an immersive environment that is perfect for demonstrating and discussing the issues of the day. Virtual Guantanamo was created by Nonny DeLa Pena and Peggy Weil with excerpts of Nonny's film "Unconstitutional". Upon entering the "exhibit" the participant gets to experience abduction and imprisonment as if it happened to them.
