Coco Cox moves into her own supported apartment after living for two and a half years in a 256-bed adult home for the mentally ill in New York City. Cox's apartment, provided by Comunilife, was made available under a special 60-bed initiative run by New York State's Office of Mental Health; this 60-bed program marked the first time supported apartments were set aside specifically for adult home residents in the state of New York.

Residents of adult homes on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) keep a monthly allowance of $168.00 after paying rent to their adult home. This allowance must cover all their personal needs, including toiletries, clothing, transportation, phone calls, etc. Most residents cannot afford adequate clothing, and end up wearing "sneakers in the winter time."
