Charlotte Bunch - Center for Women's Global Leadership at Rutgers University

The Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) develops and facilitates women's leadership for women's human rights and social justice worldwide.

The policy and advocacy program encompasses CWGL's efforts to integrate gender and women's human rights into the work of local, national, regional and international institutions. This program informs and mobilizes advocates for women's human rights around specific events and builds linkages among them to enhance their capacity to influence policy making. The Center, working in collaboration with women leaders and NGOs around the world, helped secure international policy commitments that clearly state "women rights are human rights." With these policy benchmarks in place, the Center has turned its energy toward implementation of this concept and holding policy making bodies accountable to their promises to the world's women. Core activities in this program area include UN Monitoring and Advocacy and the coordination of International Mobilization Campaigns.

The mission of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration is to engage African Americans and other communities in a dialogue that leads to actions that challenge U.S. immigration policy and the underlying issues of race, racism and economic inequity that frame it.
BAJI supports an immigration policy with the following features:
•A fair path to legalization and citizenship for undocumented immigrants
•No criminalization of undocumented workers immigrants or their families, friends and service providers
•Due process, access to the courts and meaningful judicial review for immigrants
•No mass deportations, indefinite detentions or expansion of mandatory detentions of undocumented immigrants
Katrina Anderson - Center for Reproductive Rights

This interview was conducted by a fellow participant at the US Human Rights Network National conference in Chicago April 17th-20th, 2008.

Katrina Anderson discusses her work with The Center for Reproductive Rights.

CENTER FOR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: MISSION AND VISION
MISSION
The Center for Reproductive Rights uses the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill.
VISION
Reproductive freedom lies at the heart of the promise of human dignity, self-determination and equality embodied in both the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Center works toward the time when that promise is enshrined in law in the United States and throughout the world. We envision a world in which all women are free to decide whether and when to have children; where all women have access to the best reproductive health care available; where all women can exercise their choices without coercion. More simply put, we envision a world where all women participate with full dignity as equal members of society.

James Thindwa - Jobs with Justice

This interview was conducted by a fellow participant at the US Human Rights Network National conference in Chicago April 17th-20th, 2008. James Thindwa discusses the work of "Jobs with Justice".

Jobs with Justice engages workers and allies in campaigns to win justice in workplaces and in communities where working families live. JwJ was founded in 1987 with the vision of lifting up workers’ rights struggles as part of a larger campaign for economic and social justice. We believe in long-term multi-issue coalition building , grassroots base-building and organizing and strategic militant action as the foundation for building a grassroots movement, and we believe that by engaging a broad community of allies, we can win bigger victories. We reach working people through the organizations that represent them—unions, congregations, community organizations—and directly as JwJ activists. Nearly 100,000 people have signed the Jobs with Justice pledge to Be There at least five times a year for someone else’s struggle as well as their own.

In more than 40 cities in 25 states across the country, we are building coalitions of labor, religious, student and community organizations that are committed to each other for the long haul. Our campaigns make a difference for workers facing hostile bosses, knowing they are not alone in their struggle. At JwJ, solidarity is a two-way street: when communities come out for unions, they can expect unions to come out for them. Union victories are crucial, but they are not enough. We must maintain a strong commitment that our coalitions will weigh in on community fights.
In 2005, Jobs with Justice coalitions worked on 197 workplace justice campaigns affecting more than 243,400 workers . JwJ Coalitions supported more than 135,000 workers in 107 organizing and first contract campaigns, we denounced employer harassment of immigrant workers, and we resisted cost-shifting of health care benefits. Local coalitions also worked on 169 social justice campaigns on critical issues, supporting community organizations’ efforts to secure affordable housing and defend public services, and leading proactive campaigns that can only be won when we fight together – such as economic development policies, living wage ordinances, and statewide fights to win health care for all.
