The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the American University's Washington College of Law (WCL), Washington, DC, is a joint endeavor of WCL's Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and its International Legal Studies Program and the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM), Utrecht University. The Academy offers a program of courses to meet the needs of, inter alia, legal practitioners; counselors in international relief agencies, government agencies, and international organisations; and law students specialising in human rights.

Courses offerings will include:
- Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (2 credits)
- European Human Rights Law (2 credits)
- International Humanitarian Law (2 credits)
- International Justice For Human Rights Violations (2 credits)
- Operationalizing Human Rights & Development (2 credits)
- Regional Approaches to Human Rights Law: Africa, America & Asia (2 credits)
- Right to Political Participation (1 credit)
- Terrorism & Human Rights (2 credits)
- United Nations Human Rights System (2 credits)
- Women & International Human Rights Law (2 credits)

A core set of courses will be offered in Spanish.

Classroom curricula will be complemented by a series of distinguished lectures, workshops, career panels and visits to several international organisations and NGOs based in Washington, DC. Attendees may register for a Certificate of Attendance, or, if they are attending an ABA approved law school, they may apply for academic credit.

Level: professional , post-graduate graduate

Location: Washington D.C., USA

Participants: lawyers or law students with a demonstrated interest in international human rights law. Other professionals in related fields with some academic or practical experience in human rights will also be considered to the program on a case-by-case approval. Candidates planning to take courses in English may apply to the Academy either for American Bar Association (ABA) approved credits or for a Certificate of Attendance. Candidates taking the courses in Spanish may apply only for a Certificate of Attendance.

Tuition, fee, lodging: Tuition for ABA Credit: $1,350 per credit; or Certificate of Attendance Tuition: 1 class: $1,177; 2 classes: $1910; 3 classes: $2470; 4 classes: $2,920.
