The day after the explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant - the worst man-made disaster in history - the life went on seemingly undisturbed, even though the blast released as much as 400 times the radioactive contamination of the Hiroshima bomb.
It took local officials 36 hours to start evacuating 50,000 residents of the nearest city of Prypiat. Eventually, 5,000 children would contract thyroid cancer, more than 300,000 people were made homeless, and millions are left traumatized.
