Diana McCaulay is one of the model cases of how video advocacy can work wonders for environmental/human rights campaigns. Her first Jamaican advocacy film, Cockpit Country: Voices From Jamaica’s Heart, was a short film, clocking in at 24 minutes, dealing with unethical proposed mining at Cockpit Country. The film proved an unbridled success, reaching many communities, and inspiring the Jamaican government to take action to prevent the mining operations in Cockpit Country. Her second film, a feature length documentary titled Jamaica For Sale, is currently finished and is being shown to concerned groups. In addition to her experiences with documentary filmmaking, our interview with Diana touches upon what occasion called her to support advocacy, the steps her organization, the Jamaican Environment Trust, is taking to educate Jamaican children about the environment, and how US citizens can target their tourism dollars to sustain local businesses.
