China's decision to allow foreign media access to the riot-hit city of Urumqi is, in itself, an unusual situation.
From the start of the unrest China has tried to be more open in its reporting of the riots in an attempt to shape the coverage of events.
Al Jazeera's Laura Kyle takes a look at China's changing approach to the media.
