Know the Truth About Immigrant Detention

Americans take pride in our history as a refuge for men, women, and children escaping war and torture. We also take pride in a justice system that guarantees us the right to a fair hearing. The U.S. immigration detention system betrays these ideals when it locks up immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers and denies them access to legal counsel and other basic human rights.

Our elected officials in Washington D.C. must know that we expect more from our government. When U.S. law denies rights to one group of people, the rights of all are threatened.

Chicago Police Torture Cases - A Call for Action!

On January 9, 2008, the Chicago City Council approved a nearly $20 million legal settlement to four African American men who were tortured into confessions by former police Cmdr. John Burge and his subordinates. The four allegedly were subjected to electric shocks, beatings and other brutality by Burge and his men. Though the settlement in the Burge cases is a victory, we must push for continued justice and accountability in these cases:

Join us in calling for the federal prosecution of John Burge and other Area 2 and 3 Chicago Police officers!

Midwest Coalition for Human Rights

Founded in 1995, the Midwest Coalition for
Human Rights is now a network of more
than 40 advocacy organizations, service
providers, and university-based human
rights centers in nine states. We are dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights in our Midwest region, in the United States and internationally. Working together we provide broader visibility for urgent human rights issues in the Heartland and project a strong Midwest advocacy voice in the national and international human rights debate.

A Military Man Behind Bars

Angela Joseph and her brother Warren came to the U.S from Trinidad with greencards. Warren served in the US military for eight years and returned with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He turned to crime and after serving six months jail time, immigration refused to release him because he was not a U.S citizen. He sat in detention for almost three years and was just released. Watch Angela tell her brother's story at the Special Rapporteur's panel on May 12, 2007 in NYC.

Professor David Brotherton: Detention Trial

Professor David Brotherton's work has allowed him to witness an immigration trial firsthand. He shares the overall feeling of disbelief in the courtroom when the judge finally says, "you're gonna be deported."

Professor David Brotherton: Deported to the D.R.

David Brotherton, Professor of Sociology at John Jay College in New York City, has done extensive research on the effects of deportation. In his interview with Breakthrough, he reveals how his work led him to the Dominican Republic to interview men that had lived in the United States for 30 years legally, only to be detained and deported for minor crimes. These men were forced to return to a place where they had no ties, separated from their families, and subjected to the shame and ridicule of being a "deportee."
