Over 1000 people attended a rally at the International AIDS Conference 08 in Mexico City calling for the need for the strongest possible linkages between human rights and the global struggle against HIV/AIDS and in support of the 'Now More Than Ever' declaration, signed by 600+ organizations in over 100 countries. Speakers included Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS who said emphasized that rights-based approaches are right from a human rights perspective and are the most effective policies: Respecting the rights of sex workers, men who have sex with men and drug users is key to effective HIV/AIDS prevention.
