Remembrance Day – also known as Poppy Day, Armistice Day (the event it commemorates) or Veterans Day – is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. The number of World War I casualties, both military and civilian, was over 40 million — 20 million deaths and 21 million wounded, with most of the civilian deaths due to war related famine and disease. Tuesday 11 November 2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the 1st world war, the ‘war to end all wars’. In the United Kingdom, although two minutes of silence is observed on 11 November itself, the main observance is on the second Sunday of November, Remembrance Sunday.
