About Lotje

I'm producing a multi-authored web documentary about urban inequality, and we're looking to collaborate with local content producers and filmmakers in Lagos, Phnom Penh, Paris, L.A, Sao Paolo and Moscow.

Boomtown Babylon will be a 30-minute web documentary, which invites the viewer to embark on a compelling ride from the slums and pavements of the poorest neighbourhoods, to the private mansions of the very wealthy, in six of the world’s most divided cities, meeting local characters as they navigate through each location.

It comes at a time when the global urban population expands at a rate of 3 million people per week, as the gulf between the haves and have-nots widens in cities around the world. While the wealthy retreat to safe, gated communities, the poor are forced into marginal slums, where the destruction of social capital through poverty, civil strife and displacement, cast a grim future.

Shot by local filmmakers in Lagos, Phnom Penh, Paris, Los Angeles, Sao Paolo and Moscow, Boomtown Babylon will offer a seminal, globally-accessible public platform to address the big issues facing city-dwellers around the world, using innovative online technologies and high caliber filmmaking to draw a broad spectrum of viewers.

The film-making process will rely on an online platform which will allow the contributors living in various shooting locations around the world, to participate in the development of the narrative, upload, share and discuss content, and contribute to the final edit.

Once shot, the rough cut of each interview and observatory sequence will be uploaded directly to the online platform by each local contributor, allowing the other contributors to comment on the material, and pitch relevant stories in their own cities.

Each contributor will be paid according to a fixed rate, plus a rate per second used in the final edit, and will be credited as one of the authors of this multi-authored web documentary.

As part of our cross-media distribution plan, we would like to offer a function on the website which invites viewers to remix their own webisode, using the shot footage, extra rushes, etc. This would involve a workshop program in all the relevant neighbourhoods.

The aim is to empower communities using video, to acquire funding, rally local media and address local policy issues, and our licesne agreement with content producers will reflect this aim.

This is a grass-roots spirited project in terms of both production and distribution - and we are looking for talented, young filmmakers and content producers who have a strong interest in urban issues, a flair for storytelling, and the desire to work as part of a remote team for the duration of approximately 6 months.

Please get in touch if you're interested or if you know someone . Check my blog for the trailer and further info:
