Paris, France. Every Human Has Rights partners, including The Elders, gathered with supporters to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Partner organizations renewed their commitments to stand up for the Universal Declaration, and journalists recognized for their work in human rights reporting were honored.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 20 November 2008 – Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu – one of the world's foremost and best known defenders of human rights – has spoken out about the importance of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its adoption.

To reinvigorate awareness about the Declaration, Archbishop Tutu has recorded a public service announcement to support the ‘Every Human Has Rights’ campaign, a partnership initiative which aims to encourage global conversation about human rights and the values that unite us all. The Declaration, drafted in 1948 – just two years after the founding of the UN itself – was the world's first expression of the inalienable rights shared by all, regardless of colour or creed, gender or age. It established a common set of standards for human achievement for all people: freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect and shared responsibility.

Today, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Declaration is the most translated document in the word, available in some 300 languages.

Decent work reflects the concerns of governments, workers and employers, who together provide the ILO with its unique tripartite identity.

This video features former United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Mary Robinson, who, along with Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan and others, forms The Elders, a group of leaders dedicated to using their wisdom, independent leadership and experience to tackle some of the world’s toughest problems.

"Think of a world where everybody’s afraid to speak out," says Robinson in the PSA. "Then think of a world where no one is afraid to speak up."

The "Every Human Has Rights" campaign is a year-long celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. Article 19 of the Declaration guarantees the right to freedom of opinion and expression.

The Elders & ActionAid have teamed up in this short video describing the Every Human Has Rights campaign:

Last December, The Elders joined with partner organizations around the world to launch the Every Human Has Rights campaign, celebrating an idea that took shape sixty years ago this December.
On December 10th, 1948, the newly formed United Nations adopted a universal declaration that transcended cultural and national boundaries. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights established a common standard for human achievement for all peoples and all nations; rooted in the values of freedom, equality, solidarity, tolerance, respect and shared responsibility.

Our commitment to sentiments contained in the Universal Declaration is as important today as it was 60 years ago.

Our world remains marked by divisions and gripped by fear. Genocide is happening again. Poverty is trapping billions in lives of despair. Challenges like climate change, lack of access to health and shortage of decent employment opportunities confront us all.
