St Joe: New Orleans Public Housing Demolitions

A short film documenting the demolition of public housing units in post-Katrina New Orleans in December 2007.

Public housing residents fought against the demolition of their homes but the city went ahead with demolition with little regard for residents' human right to housing and denying them the chance to participate in the development process. Thousands of homes were demolished, many of which still contained families' possessions.

This short was produced by JoLu Productions, whose forthcoming documentary, Land of Opportunity, chronicles the rebuilding of New Orleans through the eyes of those on the frontlines.

A look at the current public housing situation in New Orleans, and the local authorities’ disregard for residents’ right to return and human right to housing.

Despite the fact that the majority of New Orleans’ public housing units sustained little or no damage as a result of Hurricane Katrina, since 2007 the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) has demolished thousands of public housing units without regard for residents' human right to housing while also denying them the chance to participate in the development process.

This short was originally produced in December 2008, and was updated for the Advisory Group on Forced Evictions fact-finding mission to New Orleans in July 2009. It was produced by JoLu Productions, whose forthcoming documentary, Land of Opportunity, aims to shine a light on the forces that are shaping the urban landscape and to show through powerful imagery how New Orleans is a bellwether for the future of the United States in an increasingly globalized and fragile world.
