There is only 1 DAY LEFT! to help the Attawapiskat community attain building materials to rebuild their housing. To help, VOTE HERE up to once a day.

They are at the 800+ mark now, and have five days left to get up to 2500 votes.

Janie Kataquapit's statement from the AVIVA website:

"The community of Attawapiskat is living in an impoverished conditions, with many homeless. These people are living in tent frames because their homes were destroyed by sewage, at first leaving 90 people homeless. Attawapiskat is a Cree Community that sits on the shores of James Bay, in an isolated rural area of northern Ontario. The only access to the settlement is by plane in the summer and in the winter by ice road. As winter approaches the seriousness of not having a real home is beginning to dawn on the people living in tents. There are elders and families with members who have disabilities, and poor health living in tents. Others are living in an old healing lodge abandoned many years ago because of substance abuse. Children as young as a 1 year old are impacted in this situation. We need your help to combat these conditions. The winter can be very harsh in this region reaching temperatures of -50 degrees celsius and the tents won't be able to keep these people warm.

There are others living with 30 people in one house, a one floor dwelling with 3 bedrooms. We have a family of 15 who lost their home living at a Catholic parish hall til housing can be accomodated. As of now, social services reports over 1,000 people over the age of 18 are consider homeless over. This has created a lot of problems for the families. The community has a population of close to 2,000 individuals. Tragedy has devastated this community over and over again, such as contaminated drinking water, and high rates of youth suicides. While Christmas for most Canadians, in Attawapiskat many have lost hope and have resigned to living in these impoverished conditions. This is a community that deserves something positive, having faced one obstacle after another, for the sake of their children. We can make this a reality and at least help some families by voting for this idea. If one has a heart to reach out, please support our cause. This is about having a basic human right. The right to shelter which is intensely important in this one of the harshest environments in Canada. This community still follows there traditional way of life, living off the land as hunters and gathers but times have changed and these changes have been hard on this community. The community is growing rapidly but the houses allocated are not enough to keep up with the growing population. There is great stress among the people living under one roof. Think of your vote as a christmas gift that you can give to everyone of these people, that will help them by relieving them of these conditions. They are warm people who will open their door for you, feed you as their traditional values teach them to.

Our goal is to buy building materials or possibly trailers to have more buildings to house these people. The materials would include low cost lumber, windows/doors, insulation, roof tiles, panels, floor tiles, kitchen cabinets, bathroom fixtures, chimney, electrical things, nails, etc. So please support this cause as it is a geniune outreach to help this community.

Thank you so much and may the Creator continue to bless you as the Christmas holiday approaches. I will be attaching pictures and video to see for yourselves the conditions endured by these families who live in Attawapiskat, Ontario, Canada.

Have compassion and help them as they are in need. I ask in kindness for our children, parents and our elders!"

Abkhazia's archive: fire of war, ashes of history

"To whom it may concern,
In addition to the many unspeakable tragedies of the Balkan wars, one act of cultural vandalism caught the world's attention, as it happened as the world's cameras were trained on Bosnia-Herzegovina. This was the destruction of the Library of Sarajevo, which stored manuscripts and other documents recording the multi-cultural heritage of the state, at the end of August 1992. With help from libraries and cultural organisations around the world, many of the losses were made good in the post-war years of reconstruction.
Two months after the Sarajevo library was left in ruins, similar deliberate acts were perpetrated in another part of Europe in a war which was never the centre of media-attention, though the consequences of the war resurfaced in August 2008 with Russia's recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia in Transcaucasia. Georgian troops entered Abkhazia on 14th August 1992, sparking a 14-month war. At the end of October, the Abkhazian Research Institute of History, Language and Literature named after Dmitry Gulia, which housed an important library and archive, was deliberately torched by the invaders, who were bent on destroying the documentary evidence that proved Abkhazians' residence in their historical homeland; also targeted was the capital's public library. Though help to restore the losses has come from institutions and private donors in Russia, no further assistance has been offered by the wider international community. A chapter from Sam Topalidis' book; 'A Pontic Greek History'
Note 2.3 Ascherson (1,1995, pp. 253-4), describes how the State Archives building was destroyed during the civil war in Abkhazia.
One day in the winter of 1992, a white Lada without number-plates, containing four men from the Georgian National Guard, drew up outside. The guardsmen shot the door open and then flung incendiary grenades into the hall and stairwel. ... Sukhum citizens tried vainly to break through the cordon and enter the building to rescue burning boks and papers. ... The archives also contained the entire documentation of the Grek community, including a library, a collection of historical research from all the Grek villages of Abkhazia and complete files of the Grek language newspapers going back to the first years after the revolution.
Please note that this story was previously quoted in Agtzidis (Jan 1994). Agtzidis (1994) states on page 27 that, Kharalombos Politidis witnessed the catastrophe described above. Clogg (1999) add that these irreplaceable documents for around 45 Greek communities in Abkhazia included the only complete set of the Pontic Grek newspaper Kokinos Kapnas. This story is distressing, since records of my parent's families in Yiashtoha and Portch, near Sukhum could be lost forever.

"The Dayak Kenyah people live in the lungs of the world. Deep inside the lush rainforests of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo, they have coexisted in harmony with their forbidden forests (Tana Olen) for thousands of years.

In Setulang village, near the Malay-Indonesian border, lives the “Oma’lung” tribe — a particular sub-group of Dayaks now internationally renowned for gutsy efforts to save their forests from deforestation.

Driven by an ancient Dayak code restricting access to the forest and its resources, the Oma’lung use centuries-old indigenous knowledge to manage their natural landscapes sustainably (with practices like shifting cultivation and agro-forestry) so that both humans and nature benefit...."

"Zacharias Kunuk and his team at Igloolik Isuma Productions have teamed up with researcher Ian Mauro, University of Victoria, to document and communicate Inuit knowledge regarding climate change in Nunavut. This video research project values the important knowledge Inuit have regarding climate change impacts and associated adaptation strategies. Using video, we plan to interview elders, hunters and other locals about their climate change perspectives related to health, environment and wildlife issues, and have this information posted in both Inuktitut and English on IsumaTV (www.isuma.tv) and developed into a feature

In this video, produced by AIDESEP (Peruvian Jungle Interethnic Development Association), depicts president Alberto Pizango speaking out against the injustices done to Indigenous people in Peru in the name of development. He notes that Indigenous people in Peru are the owners of ancestral territories, and thus need to be consulted for any development projects. Also pictured are eyewitness accounts of unprovoked police attacks during Indigenous protests.
