Israeli Policeman head-butts Palestinians in Silwan, 5 November 2008

On Wednesday, 5 November 2008, in the Bustan section of the Silwan neighborhood in East Jerusalem, the Jerusalem Municipality demolished one house and an addition that had been built onto another house. In the course of removing the occupants of the structures, a helmeted
policeman head-butted two Palestinians, a man and a woman.

A researcher from B'Tselem filmed the incident on video, and the organization handed over the tape to the Department for the Investigation of Police in the Ministry of Justice, which opened an investigation. The Bustan section contains some 90 houses, which are home to about 1,000 persons. In recent years, the Municipality has issued demolition orders for most of these houses.

Settlers Attack Shepherds in the South Hebron Hills

On 8 June ‘08, two settlers tried unsuccessfully to drive shepherds off Palestinian land near Khirbet Susiya. After they left, the shepherds called relatives for reinforcement, fearing an attack. Among those who came was Muna a-Nawaj’ah, with a video camera she received from B'Tselem. Ten minutes later, she filmed four masked men armed with clubs approaching the family and attacking one of the shepherds. B'Tselem: Settler vandalizes trees of Palestinian – Hebron

The army has fenced off the farmland of Khalifah Da'neh, a Palestinian resident of the Hebron District, attaching it to the lands of the adjacent settlement Givat Haharsinah. On the morning of 5 February 2008, a settler drove his car onto the farmland, began to cut off branches of fruit trees. Da'neh stood startled on the other side of the fence, unable to do anything about it. He filmed the incident in its entirety. Da'neh handed the video film over to the police, with whom he filed a complaint. Israel fenced and attached Da'neh’s land to the settlement in 2004, classifying it a “special security zone.” The state promised the High Court of Justice that it would enable Palestinian farmers free entry to their fenced land, and would prohibit settlers from entering. The Da'neh case shows that the reality is just the opposite: absurdly, Israel does not permit entry of Palestinian landowners to “special security zones,” yet enables settlers to enter the land as they wish. www.btselem.org

B'Tselem: Demolition of houses, Tulkarm District

On 31 January 2008, the Civil Administration delivered to two homeowners in Far'un, a village south of Tulkarm, notice that orders had been issued to demolish their houses, which lie close to the Separation Barrier. In 2007, the Civil Administration demolished seven houses in the village that were situated near the route of the barrier. The authorities claimed that the houses were constructed without a building permit. www.btselem.org

B'Tselem: West Bank road for Israelis only - Route 443

Route 443 serves Israeli commuters traveling between the two largest cities in Israel – Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The road runs through the West Bank, but Palestinians are strictly prohibited from using it. In the past, Route 443 was the main thoroughfare serving the southern Ramallah district. In 1988, Israel expropriated land from Palestinian villagers living along the road in order to widen it, claiming that the road would serve their villages as well. However in 2002, the army prohibited Palestinian traffic on the road, stating 'security reasons'. www.btselem.org

In March 2007, a new settlement was established in the a-Ras neighborhood of Hebron. Since its establishment, there has been a noticeable increase in harassment and attacks by settlers and Israeli security forces on the neighborhood’s Palestinian residents. The Abu 'Ayesha family lives across the street from the extremist Tel Rumeida settlement in Hebron, West Bank. They suffer severe and frequent harassment at the hands of the settlers. 14-year-old Fida' Abu 'Ayesha has taken to using the camera as a form of protection, and as a way of documenting her reality. The Rashid family lives in a cave in the village of Haribat a-Nabi in the Southern Hebron Hills – right next to the Separation Barrier. In September 2007 the family made a video tape to introduce Israelis to their home and way of life. The tape also presents one of the children reading a letter to Israelis, and soldiers detaining farmers near the cave during the month of Ramadan, captured on film by the children. www.btselem.org

B'Tselem: Maysun al-Hayek

In February 2002, Maysun al-Hayek and her husband were on the way to the hospital, where she was to give birth to their daughter. Suddenly, soldiers opened fire at them, killing her husband and wounding her and her father-in'-law. The soldier undressed the wounded victims and had them lay on the ground, naked and uncovered, until Red Crescent personnel arrived. www.btselem.org
