Human rights throughout the world

Human rights throughout the world
In Rwanda in 1994 an estimated one million Tutsi men, women and children were slaughtered at the hands of government soldiers. In response to this, the UN established the International Criminal Tribunal in neighbouring Tanzania to try the perpetrators of the killings - its creation was to be a signal that the world would not tolerate crimes of genocide. The tribunal holds individual war crime suspects responsible for their actions, rather than entire communities.

Malaria... an African viewpoint

Malaria is the poor cousin of many high-profile diseases and illnesses. It doesn't get the attention that say AIDS or cancer gets. Yet, silently and away from the affluent cities of the globe, malaria is killing so many lives. And destroying the productivity of people. Muyambi Ellady (32) of the Uganda Network on Toxic Free Malaria Control (UNETMAC) explains issues arising from his part of Eastern Africa, and the implications beyond.

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the emergence of parasites, along the Thai-Cambodia border, that are resistant to the medicine artemisinin and could seriously undermine global malaria control. The recent shift from drugs that were failing to the highly effective artemisinin-based combination therapies allowed great progress in fighting malaria, one of the world's major killers.
