Free Jonas!

April 28, 2007, Jonas Burgos, the son of the late newspaper editor and press freedom writer Joe Burgos, was abducted by unidentified men at Ever Gotesco in Commonwealth Quezon City. He is the third among the 5 children.

Kindhearted, generous, thoughtful and humble, is how his family, friends and colleagues describe Jonas. His mother, Edith Burgos, also remembers her son, who, everytime he leaves the house to help the farmers, brought with him a couple of pairs of shirts and pants and footwear—that she buys for him—would end up coming home with one pair each. And everytime she would ask him where his things are, he would gladly answer he gave them away because they need it more than him and that he does not need too much for himself.

Jonas loves farming and because of this he took up BS in Agriculture at the Benguet State University. While managing their farm in Bulacan, Jonas also helped the farmers of Bulacan. He shared his knowlege to his barrio mates and introduced organic farming.
His love for farming also translated in his love for the poor farmers in our society. By then, Jonas had been sharing his knowledge to his barrio mates and introduced organic farming to peasants in their town and other surrounding areas and became a member of Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Bulacan (AMB or Alliance of Concerned Peasants in Bulacan), a provincial chapter of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP or Peasant Movement of the Philippines).

Two years has passed since Jonas’ abduction and there is still no sign of him. The Burgos family, who filed a Writ of Amparo for Jonas, is still awaiting the decision of the Supreme Court.
To this date, according to Karapatan’s documentation, there are 202 victims of enforced disappearance since 2001, when Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assumed the Presidency. Desaparecidos estimates that there are 2000 victims of enforced disappearance since Marcos’ Martial Law.

The United Nations Convention on the Protection of All persons against enforced disappearance defines "enforced disappearance" as “the arrest, detention, abduction or any other form of deprivation of liberty by agents of the State or by persons or groups of persons acting with the authorization, support or acquiescence of the State, followed by a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of liberty or by concealment of the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared person, which place such a person outside the protection of the law.”

Collective Struggle for Collective Victory

Medical workers at Tondo Medical Center again conducted a picket-rally in front of the hospital last January 18.
Led by the Tondo Medical Center Employees Association—Alliance of Health Workers, the protesters called on the hospital management to stop the 16, 24 and 32-hours shifting system and to be paid for overtime work.
They agreed not to wait for the promised dialogue between the hospital management and health undersecretary Elmer Punzalan. They agreed to hold a dialogue instead with the hospital management the very next day.
On January 19, after a long negotiation with hospital director Dr. Victor Dela Cruz, TMCEA did not back down from its demands. And they won.

National Interfaith Mission for Peace and Justice in Maguindanao

On January 22 to 26, Kodao Productions covered the National Interfaith Mission for Peace and Justice in Maguindanao. The event was to commemorate the second month since the gruesome massacre that killed 58 people, 32 of whom were journalists.
The “Ampatuan Massacre” of 23 November 2009 is the worst politically-motivated killing in the Philippines and the incident that felled the most number of journalists in a day.
Church people, human rights groups, lawyers’ organizations, media groups and many others accompanied the victims’ families to the site in solidarity. The mission also offered relief goods to the “silent victims” of the massacre, the hundreds of families who were forcibly evacuated amid fears of the continuing presence of private armies and government paramilitary forces who are suspects in the crime.
The following is a collection of photos of the event.

STOP! 12, 16, 24, 32 hours duty of nursing staff ! – TMCEA-AHW

Tondo Medical Center's nurses, midwives and nursing aides are protesting understaffing as one of the worst problems they encounter at work.

This abuse and rights violation have saddled the hospital workers for three years already. From regular eight-hour shifts, it has gotten worse to 12- up to 32-hour shifts without rest. When their complaints went unheeded, the staff wore red ribbons on their uniforms.

They petitioned Undersecretary Elmer Punzalan at the Department of Health last December and they are hoping that a solution on understaffing is on the offing this month.

AGPAYSO A BALITOK (True Gold) Part II

Three main characters, all from Ifugao communities will tell their stories why they decided to join the anti-mining organizations in their villages after selling their agricultural lands to the Australian mining company.
This video will discuss alternative economic activity to destructive large-scale mining operations and their determination to oppose destructive mining practices in their community.
One of the main objectives of this video is to be an eye-opener to the other indigenous tribes who have no knowledge at all what are those consequences that might happened to them and to the environment once the destructive mining operations will continue.
This video was documented only this year, 2009, in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya and in the villages of Didipio, Alimit and Malabing in particular.
