The region around Araguaína in Northeast Brazil has the highest incidence of slave labor in Brazil. The Center for Human Rights along with the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) are leading forces in rescuing enslaved workers, taking legal depositions for use in prosecutions of slave holders, protection of escaped enslaved workers, and education and consciousness-raising among all workers.

OMON - Russian War Criminals on duty in Chechnya

Shakhid Baysayev from Chechnya was detained by Russian special police forces (OMON) in March 2000. This video was filmed by Russian soldiers themselves, later they sold the videotape to Baysayev's widow for 1,000 USD. This film was key evidence in the European Court of Human Rights, which April 5th, 2007, condemned Russia for the disappearance and death of this 61-year old Chechen man. We've just received word that Starbucks and Ethiopia have finalized an agreement that ends their trademark dispute and brings both sides together in partnership to help Ethiopian farmers. This agreement has the potential to give these farmers a fair share of the profits for their world-renowned coffees, and it's what Oxfam has been pushing for since November.
