The Killing of Yawan Wayeni

On August 3, 2009, Yawen Wayeni of Matembu village, Serui, in the Indonesian province of Papua, was captured by Indonesian paramililtary police (BRIMOB). Wayeni was an escaped political prisoner who had been accused of burning police vehicles and buildings. At the time of his arrest, local NGO sources claim Wayeni was unarmed and not politically active. These same sources maintain that during interrogation into the whereabouts of local pro-independence guerillas (OPM/TPN), BRIMOB officers sliced Wayeni's abdomen open with a bayonet, causing his death. BRIMOB maintains that Wayeni's injuries came while he was resisting arrest with a homemade firearm. The following photos and video of the incident were taken by BRIMOB officers and leaked by unknown sources.
The Indonesian government rejects allegations of state violence in Papua, but as long as restrictions on international media and NGO access to Indonesian Papua – tight and growing tighter – remain in place, no independent verification of the facts will be possible, and actions of security forces will continue to be questioned.

The beauty of a democracy is the fact that any person gifted with the desire and calling to do so can rise up into the rank of the politician. Why have we failed to see the true change we need in this world? Because we lack the political will, that is all. We have gotten too comfortable in our assumptions of what a politician should be and how they should act and how they should look. We assume that by picking this comfortable old form of politician we gain security in the stability of our country. Well, have you looked around?
Our rights are under attack, we no longer have the longest undefended border in the world and Parliament is considering a bill that would require the tracking and tracing of the online activity of every Canadian and makes it accessible to law enforcement agencies without the need for a court approved warrant, investigation of your personal correspondence, online shopping and web searches available to be scoured for the mere suspicion of guilt. Nothing short of an attack on our charter rights and where is the voice of the official opposition? They're more busy posturing to force an election over a budget matter but this vile attack on the rights of the Canadian people goes on unquestioned?!

I see the ability to build a more secure society by creating universal post-secondary education, by ending the drug war and taking steps to eliminate poverty. I want to see the Charter of Rights and Freedoms being treated as a sacred document which is expanded upon, not shrunk. It is not just some sheet of words to be ignored by those who rule. I see a more vibrant democracy by giving Canadians a say in how their tax money is spent on budget day and by replacing the senate with the right of the people to call a referendum on any piece of legislation. I dream of a world where we consider both the economic cost of our actions as well as the human costs.

Boycott Olympics to Free Burma - Chinese Mission to U.N.

The Coalition for Regime Change in Burma is calling for a boycott of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The Chinese government actively supports Burma's brutal military dictatorship through arms sales, economic cooperation and political cover.

On Friday, October 5th, Burmese people and supporters gathered outside the Chinese mission to the UN to call for China to stop supporting the violent military regime in Burma.

The Games will take place only months before the 50th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising against China's invasion of Tibet. The movement's organizers are calling on Tibetans worldwide to join protests during the Beijing Olympics and support a return march of exile Tibetans to their homeland.
