MacroAsia, the flagship company of airline and cigarette magnate Lucio Tan (Philippines richest man) is set to start full-scale operations in Brookes Point Municipality. In this film, attorney Mary Jean D. Feliciano explains that there are no legal bases for endorsing mining in her Municipality, which is also one of the richest in terms of agricultural resources and fishery. Soon, this national patrimony may be sacrificed for the vested interests of a few who make large profits at the expense of thousands of others, hence curtailing the livelihood of future generations. Attorney Feliciano describes some of the controversial issues that government agencies, at all levels, as well as mining companies, should resolve and seriously - attend to. The failure of these institutions and commercial enterprises to adhere to and respect the provisions of applicable laws, have seriously undermined their credibility. The inconsiderate decisions made by government authorities (Local Government Units, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples) to endorse, support and approve mining explorations and operations stand as a tangible proof of how these institutions have clearly failed to carry out their own mandates. * The interview was carried out on September 2008 For more information: Sign the online campaign to save Palawan:
