Land Disputes Across Cambodia Lead Villagers to Phnom Penh

More than 70 villagers including women and children from several communities in Bavel and Koas Krolar districts of Battambang province. The villagers walked the 291 kms from Battambang province to the capital Phnom Penh in order to lodge complaints with the national government. It took them 6 days. They are from communities affected by two land disputes which district and provincial authorities have failed to resolve. This video was captured by local land activists supported by LICADHO on cameras supplied by WITNESS.

After her son was suspected of participating in protests lead by university students against a mining corporation, the Indonesian police apprehended Anselina Temkon from her home.

She was allegedly beaten with a gun, her hands burnt with cigarettes and, with a gun to her head, the police allegedly told her they were going to take her to a nearby town and “finish her off” if she did not disclose the whereabouts of her son.

Police reportedly detained Anselina for four days without access to visitors.

Since 1971, Papuan women traders had been selling vegetables, fruit, fish, and spices in Papua in the a traditional market at the center of Jayapura, Indonesia. In a recent effort to clean up the town center, the city government has repeatedly evicted market traders, and ordered them to move to a new market on the outskirts of the city.
