leprosy patient, Taiwan

Lo-Sheng Sanatorium is a hospital for lepers, which was build during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan. During the 1930s, leprosy patients were forced to live in the hospital. Lo-Sheng Sanatorium became a life-long imprisonment for thousands of leprosy patients.

Currently, the plans to replace Lo-Sheng Sanatorium with a Mass Rapid Transport depot evokes debates on human rights issues and preservation movement in Taiwan. The plan of demolishing the sanatorium would result in the displacement of the leprosy patients, who had little choice but to stay in the hospital because of chronic isolation and fear for the discrimination from the outside world.

This is a interview with a old lady who has lived in the hospital for decades. (In Taiwanese and Mandarin)
