Apr. 5 - As the Olympic flame goes to Russia, the International Olympic Committee defends the choice of China as host.

A recent Amnesty International report said awarding the 2008 Games to China has made human rights worse. French president Nicolas Sarkozy has said he will not attend the games' opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics unless China opens talks with the exiled Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama and there have been suggestions in some quarters of a boycott of the games.
