DAP’s forum, ‘No to a Police State in Blogosphere’ in solidarity with PKR’s Nathaniel Tan saw a packed house at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall yesterday.

Tan, was recently detained by the police on suspicion of having documents classified as official secrets in his possession.

Speakers included DAP’s Tony Pua, and Lim Guan Eng PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar, prominent blogger Jeff Ooi, human rights lawyer Haris Ibrahim and Tan who narrated his four-day ordeal.

Tony Pua in calling for the setting up of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) narrated the story of 39-year-old welder Tong Ket Ming who alleged that he endured severe beatings by the police while under remand.

Tong was allegedly beaten black and blue and was denied any medical treatment for the injuries he suffered …He also claimed that he was unable to contact his family.

Pua warned that assaults in police custody could happen to any writer or blogger arrested and this is why the support mechanism that assisted Tan was vital.
