Tomorrow, June 26th, survivors, activists, and governments worldwide will recognize the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

"This is a day on which we pay our respects to those who have endured the unimaginable. This is an occasion for the world to speak up against the unspeakable. It is long overdue that a day be dedicated to remembering and supporting the many victims and survivors of torture around the world."
- Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

This year, the Obama administration’s decision to close Guantanamo Bay makes this particular June 26th an especially significant mark of progress for those campaigning against torture - and for those who have survived it - around the world.

Amnesty International sets the stage for action in the video below, which features two former Guantanamo detainees speaking out about their experiences.  The video sets on the record past atrocities of torture, and recognizes changes that are already being implemented, but presses on issues that must be promptly and properly addressed.

You can take part in and support June 26th by visiting the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims website, and finding out what events are taking place near you at June 26 Around the World. You can find more on anti-torture campaigns on the Hub.
