Watch “The Reckoning: The Battle for the International Criminal Court” tonight on PBS’ POV at 10 pm (check local listings). Here's our description of the film:
Over 120 countries have united to form the International Criminal Court (ICC) — the first permanent court created to prosecute perpetrators, no matter how powerful, of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. The Reckoning follows dynamic ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo and his team for three years across four continents as he issues arrest warrants for Lord's Resistance Army leaders in Uganda, puts Congolese warlords on trial, shakes up the Colombian justice system, and charges Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir with genocide in Darfur. Like a deft thriller, The Reckoning keeps you on the edge of your seat. Will the prosecutor succeed? Will the world ensure that justice prevails? An Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
Tonight’s broadcast of Paco de Onis, Peter Kinoy and Pamela Yates’ powerful film presents a special opportunity to raise awareness around international justice issues among a broad and highly engaged audience - and that includes everyone using the Hub. We specifically chose this film for its artful depiction of the development and function of an emerging international institution - the International Criminal Court - whose role is little understood by the general public and frequently mischaracterized by its opponents.
Once you've watched the film - either via tonight's broadcast or online via the POV website
(available July 15-Aug 13, 2009 in the United States only) - there are a number of ways that you can get more involved – from taking part in IJCentral, a global social network about the international justice movement, to hosting a debate on U.S. involvement in the International Criminal Court.
