What are the major challenges that LGBT activists in Latvia encounter in their work? Evita Goša is the board member of Mozaika in Riga, an alliance of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgendered persons, and their friends. She describes how ignorance and stigma feed into repressive actions of various political actors in her country and outlines actions needed to bring greater visibility to and protection of LGBT rights.

This interview was filmed in early November 2008 in Strasbourg, France, at the roundtable organized by the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights on the situation of human rights defenders. The gathering brought together 55 defenders from COE countries who shared their experiences of obstacles in their daily work of promoting human rights and pointed out to possible supportive actions. “Human rights defenders work on a wide range of issues. We must ensure that their work is not only protected, but supported by both national authorities and international organizations,” emphasized the Commissioner.
