"As he stood up to leave, he said to me “electric shocks, everyday” Everyday."
My husband was arrested on the 21st of Dec. After all we did, we finally got a visit, and today I went at 8am. They took us into a room, in a wooden cabin. One of the walls was glass, it was me, my mother in law, and my children. Then I heard, here’s Najji, here he is. Then Najji came in, when he came in I noticed his eyes were popped out and he could not see. He was holding onto the door and trying to see who is in the room. He was just trying to concentrate but couldn’t because of the light. His mother hugged him and asked him how he was, he said “there’s nothing” she asked him if they tortured him. And he said “there’s nothing”. But when he wanted to sit down, he was looking for a chair, but he couldn’t see. The place was filled with chairs but he was confused. Then I said to him “these are not your clothes” He was wearing a long sleeve shirt that wasn’t his. And he was wearing the same pants that the security forces took with them from our house when they arrested him in his sleeping clothes.
He said “this is not mine, I don’t have clothes someone gave it to me now” I said but I brought you clothes the day they hit us… I didn’t tell him that, I said the day we came to the public prosecution building. He said “I never got them, I don’t have clothes and until today I haven’t taken a shower. Somebody put this on me now”. He started pointing at his eyes and telling me that since he got arrested until today he’s been blindfolded, that’s why his eyes were like that. I asked about the handcuffs. And he said “until today”. I asked him who are you with”? he said “alone, in a 2m by 2m room”
Man in Audience “solitary confinement?”
Yes. I asked him “didn’t you hear us yesterday, we were outside the building calling your names with speakers?” he said “I didn’t hear anything, I don’t hear anything.
I don’t hear, I don’t see, and I don’t speak. We’re not allowed to” When he was talking to me, he’d put his shaking hand by his mouth so they don’t see him. Our daughter gave him some juice, he took it really quick, with his hands shaking and he was drinking it so fast. I asked him about the food, he shook his head. It seems he doesn’t even know what date it is, he asked me about the results of our kids finals, even though their finals begin next week. His words were shaky and his back was bent.
He didn’t even recognize his kids. I kept telling him here is Ghadeer, here is Aalya, but he didn’t recognize them. And the kids were afraid because of his eyes and the way he looked. The visit was 10 minutes. My mother in law asked Najji to take the food with him. Najji said “I won’t take it, there’s no point.” I told my mother in law “If they take it, this man with no soul who is standing here will be the one who eats it”. Then I told the man that I had to speak privately with my husband, I need to get some pin numbers. But he came closer, so I gave Najji a notebook and a pen. But he couldn’t write, his hands were shaking so badly. I didn’t need a pin number but I wanted him to write down what he couldn’t say in front of them.
As he stood up to leave, he said to me “electric shocks, everyday” Everyday.
His hair has grown. I feel that they made him wear that shirt to hide something. He was wearing the same clothes he had on two weeks ago when they arrested him. Except for that shirt they made him wear, to hide something.
